Description

The Volkswagen T2B Bus, also known as the “Late Bay,” represents the second generation of Volkswagen’s iconic Type 2, one of the most recognizable vehicles in automotive history. Introduced in 1967 to replace the split windscreen T1, the T2 lost its distinctive divided front glass in favor of a single curved windscreen, earning it the “Bay window” nickname. The T2B designation refers specifically to models built from 1972 onward, distinguished by a larger engine bay to accommodate bigger 1.7 to 2.0 litre engines borrowed from the Volkswagen Type 4, along with a redesigned rear end and enlarged air inlets for improved cooling. By 1973, Volkswagen had also introduced squared off bumpers and relocated front turn indicators, giving the T2B its final, most recognizable shape.

Beyond its practical role as a van, pickup, and camper platform, the Volkswagen Bus became deeply woven into 1960s and 1970s counterculture, earning nicknames like “hippie van” and “hippie bus” around the world, and remains one of the most beloved and instantly recognizable vehicles ever produced, still fondly remembered today as a symbol of freedom, road trips, and laid back travel.
