Description
“FURSTY” holds a genuinely special place in professional drifting history as the very first competition car built by New Zealand drift legend Mad Mike Whiddett, originally created back in 2004. Based on a Mazda 808 station wagon, sold in Japan as the Grand Familia and closely related to the Mazda RX-3, the original build featured a 13B rotary engine swap and a genuine RX-3 front end conversion, helping propel Mike to early wins like Skidfest 2004 and putting his name on the map before he eventually sold the car in pursuit of his dream of owning a Mazda FD RX-7.
Mad Mike repurchased FURSTY in 2024, restoring the car to its original 2004 look before rebuilding it into a genuinely serious modern drift machine. The revived FURSTY now runs a TCP built quad rotor 26B engine, estimated to produce between 440 and 520 kW at the wheels, paired with a Mazda MX-5 rear end featuring fully independent suspension, a Toyota AE86 steering rack, and an HGT six speed sequential transmission, all wrapped in a genuine Rocket Bunny widebody kit that retains full functionality of every door and the rear hatch. The car’s name comes from its distinctive vanity license plate, and the build now represents both a nostalgic tribute to Mad Mike’s roots and a genuinely capable modern competitor built for the 2024 D1GP season.
Hot Wheels celebrates this legendary professional drift build as part of its Ronin Run 2 range within the Car Culture series, an imported line known for its detailed, adult collector focused castings of real world custom and motorsport vehicles. Numbered 3 in the series, this casting recreates Mad Mike’s custom RX-3 wagon casting with genuine Rocket Bunny over-fenders, detailed sponsor liveries, and the authentic “FURSTY” license plate, built with a complete Metal/Metal body and chassis paired with genuine Real Riders rubber tires, finished in Blue at 1:64 scale.
