The Porsche 904 Carrera GTS holds a unique place in Porsche history as the last full competition Porsche that customers could still collect directly from the factory and drive home on public roads. Designed by 28 year old Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche, son of company chairman Ferry Porsche, the 904 was introduced for the 1964 racing season as Porsche’s answer to FIA homologation rules requiring manufacturers to build at least 100 street legal examples to qualify for GT class competition. Officially named the Carrera GTS rather than simply “904,” the car’s real designation was avoided due to an ongoing dispute between Porsche and Peugeot over numeric model names containing a zero.

As Porsche’s first car to use a fiberglass reinforced body, the 904 achieved a remarkably small frontal area of just 1.4 square metres, contributing to excellent aerodynamics for its era. Most examples were powered by a 2.0 litre flat four engine, though Porsche also built a small number with more powerful flat six and even flat eight engines for higher level competition. With around 106 to 110 examples produced between 1964 and 1965, succeeding the earlier 718 as the last sports racing iteration of the 356 lineage, the 904 remains one of the most sought after and best balanced sports racers of its period, with well preserved examples now regularly appearing at prestigious events like the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
