Description
The Toyota Soarer, introduced in 1981 as a Japanese domestic market only personal luxury grand touring coupe, represents one of the most technologically significant JDM vehicles ever built. Positioned above cars like the Toyota Supra and closely related to the Toyota Carina and Celica platforms, the Soarer offered genuine cutting edge features well ahead of its time, including the world’s first full color CRT dashboard display in 1985, capable of displaying engine and drivetrain diagnostics or even television programming while the car was parked.
By its third generation, launched in 1991 under the Z30 chassis code, the Soarer had grown into a genuinely sophisticated grand tourer, sharing its body and key components with the newly launched Lexus SC, which Toyota developed to complement the success of the flagship LS 400 sedan in international markets. The JDM Soarer distinguished itself from its Lexus twin with the option of a 5 speed manual transmission, a feature never offered on the SC, and buyers could choose from a range of powerful inline six and V8 engines, including the legendary 1JZ and 2JZ turbocharged engines that remain highly prized among tuners today for their exceptional strength and tuning potential. The Soarer went on to outsell key domestic rivals like the Mazda Cosmo and Nissan Leopard, and remained in production for 24 years until it was finally retired in 2005, replaced in Japan by the Lexus SC nameplate itself.
Hot Wheels celebrates this genuinely important JDM luxury icon as part of its Modern Classics range within the Car Culture series, released as part of the 2026 Car Culture Modern Classics 10th Anniversary lineup. Numbered 3 out of 5 in the series, this casting is finished in a premium Champagne-Gold/Bronze paint, built with a complete Metal/Metal body and chassis and rolling on genuine Real Riders rubber tires with a distinctive bronze-brown finish and chrome lip, capturing the Soarer’s clean, sophisticated grand tourer proportions at 1:64 scale.
