Description
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX plays a pivotal role in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, gifted to protagonist Sean Boswell by Han Seoul-Oh after Sean wrecks Han’s Nissan Silvia during an early drift battle against rival Takashi. Sean uses the Evo IX to learn the art of drifting, eventually mastering the skill well enough to defeat Takashi’s lieutenant, Morimoto, in a tense showdown on the streets of Tokyo, making the car central to Sean’s transformation throughout the film.
Turning Mitsubishi’s genuinely all wheel drive icon into a drift capable machine required a real engineering solution rather than simple movie trickery. Mitsubishi donated ten brand new Japanese market Evo IX models to the production, eight of which were converted to rear wheel drive using a kit developed by Rhys Millen Racing, disconnecting the front driveshafts and capping the transfer case output to eliminate front wheel drive entirely. The movie cars were further finished with an APR wide body kit, lowered Eibach springs, and oversized 19 inch wheels, all built around the Evo IX’s genuine 2.0 litre turbocharged 4G63 engine, creating a machine the film’s own stunt coordinators noted “wants to go sideways all the time.”
Hot Wheels celebrates this cleverly engineered movie drift car as part of its Fast & Furious series, officially licensed by Universal City Studios and Mitsubishi, produced as an imported release for adult collectors. This casting is finished in a vibrant Red paint with accurate movie themed decos, custom body kit lines, and a rear spoiler, built with a complete Metal/Metal body and chassis paired with genuine Real Riders rubber tires, capturing the widebody Evo IX’s aggressive drift proportions at 1:64 scale.
