Description
The Datsun 620 was a genuinely important compact pickup truck built by Nissan under the Datsun nameplate from 1972 to 1979, arriving in the US market just ahead of the 1973 oil crisis at exactly the right moment. Marketed as the “Li’l Hustler” in America and the “Sportruck” in Canada, the 620 succeeded the earlier 520 and 521 series trucks and quickly became one of the key players in the newly emerging compact pickup segment, alongside rivals like the Toyota Hilux and Chevrolet LUV. Introduced with the same 1.6 litre L16 engine found in Datsun’s race winning 510 sedan, and priced at a bargain $2,236, the 620 offered genuine driving character alongside its practical, work ready capability.
Styling wise, the 620 introduced Datsun’s now famous “bullet side” body crease, an outward flare along the side panels that gave the truck a distinctly muscular, aggressive look for its class. Over its production run, Nissan expanded the lineup with larger L18 and L20B engines, and in 1977 introduced the King Cab, the first extended cab configuration ever offered on a compact pickup, adding genuine extra storage and seating flexibility. Interestingly, roughly 40 percent of 620 buyers reportedly purchased the truck to use in place of a car rather than for pure commercial work, reflecting the surprisingly sporty, lifestyle oriented reputation the little Datsun built during its lifetime.
Hot Wheels celebrates this pioneering compact pickup as part of its Japan Historics 5 range within the Car Culture series, an imported line known for its detailed, adult collector focused castings of celebrated Japanese classics. This casting, numbered 4 out of 5 in the series, is finished in a classic Beige/Tan paint with black accents and Datsun branded tailgate detailing, built with a complete Metal/Metal body and chassis paired with genuine Real Riders rubber tires, capturing the 620’s distinctive bullet side styling at 1:64 scale.
