Description
The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS became one of Dominic Toretto’s signature vehicles across the Fast & Furious franchise, first appearing in the closing scene of the original 2001 film as Dom drives it to an unknown destination after fleeing Los Angeles. The car returns prominently in the 2009 film Fast & Furious, where Dom drives the same red Chevelle back to Los Angeles to attend the funeral of his wife Letty Ortiz, before the car is later stripped down and repainted matte grey for a more aggressive, street fighter transformation used throughout the rest of the movie.
Behind the scenes, the production built several primer grey stunt Chevelles specifically for the film, including one designed purely to perform wheelstands, with styling reportedly influenced in part by a modified Chevelle owned by director Michael Mann. The red hero car, used for close up and undamaged shots, survived filming and later sold at auction, complete with a period correct 350 cubic inch V8, four speed manual transmission, roll cage, and a nitrous bottle, genuine hallmarks of the character’s street racing persona. Decades later, following the events of Furious 7, Dom purchases an identical red and black 1970 Chevelle SS 454, a nod to the original film car that ties his story back to where the saga began.
Hot Wheels honors this iconic muscle car as part of its Fast & Furious series, officially licensed by Universal City Studios and produced as an imported release for adult collectors. This casting is finished in the film accurate Red paint that highlights the Chevelle’s long hood and muscular fastback proportions at 1:64 scale, celebrating one of Dominic Toretto’s most enduring and recognizable vehicles.
