Description
The 2007 Ford Mustang GT belongs to the fifth generation, or S197, Mustang, a design that marked a retro futuristic return to the pony car’s roots after Ford abandoned the previous generation’s more rounded styling. Featuring a long hood, wide fenders, vertical tri light taillights, and single round headlights reminiscent of early 1970s Mustangs, the S197 was praised for genuinely capturing classic Mustang character in a modern package. Power for the GT trim came from a 4.6 litre modular V8 producing 300 horsepower, paired with either a manual or automatic transmission, and 2007 also marked the return of the legendary Shelby GT500 to the Mustang lineup after Ford’s Special Vehicle Team partnered once again with Carroll Shelby.
Beyond the factory cars, the S197 Mustang became one of the most heavily modified platforms in Ford’s history, and it found an unexpected home in motorsport disciplines far from traditional drag racing and road course competition. Tire manufacturer Falken sponsored a Ford Mustang GT campaign in the Formula Drift series, first fielded by Vaughn Gittin Jr. starting in 2005 and later by Justin Pawlak from 2010 onward, helping introduce the American pony car to a competitive scene that had previously been dominated almost entirely by turbocharged Japanese imports. The Falken Mustang became a fan favorite for proving that American muscle could hold its own in the highly technical, sideways world of professional drifting.
Hot Wheels brings this pairing of classic pony car and modern motorsport into its Then and Now series, finished here in a Blue-green colorway paired with the recognizable Falken Tire branding associated with the brand’s Formula Drift program. This casting captures the S197 Mustang’s long hood and muscular fenders at 1:64 scale, celebrating a genuine chapter of American muscle car motorsport history.
