The 1989 Toyota Supra, part of the third generation A70 platform, marked a genuine milestone as the very first Supra to break away completely from the Celica lineup and stand on its own as a dedicated sports car. Toyota positioned the A70 as a technological halo for the entire brand, launching in 1986 with available features like 3-channel ABS and TEMS, Toyota’s Electronic Modulated Suspension, targeting established rivals like the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 944 Turbo, and Mazda RX-7 Turbo.

The turbocharged variant, powered by a 3.0 litre 7M-GTE inline six, produced 232 horsepower and 254 lb ft of torque, delivering a genuinely competitive 0 to 60 mph time of 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 144 mph. This turbo engine was also Toyota’s first ever distributorless design, using individual coil packs fired by a cam position sensor, paired with a heavy duty five speed manual transmission built specifically to handle the extra power. For the 1989 model year specifically, Toyota refined the turbo further, extracting an additional 2 horsepower alongside a redesigned rear spoiler and updated interior switchgear, representing the final and most refined iteration of the beloved Mk3 Supra before the arrival of the legendary 2JZ powered Mk4 generation.
