The Audi RS2 Avant holds a legendary place in automotive history as Audi’s very first RS badged model, launching the entire RS performance lineage that continues to this day. Born from an unlikely but genuine collaboration between Audi and Porsche in the early 1990s, the project began when Audi’s then CEO Ferdinand Piech wanted a limited run, high performance estate car to rival the BMW M3, and turned to financially struggling Porsche for engineering help. Using the existing Audi 80 Avant wagon as its base, the RS2 was developed over 18 months and ultimately assembled at Porsche’s own Zuffenhausen factory, the very same production line that built the legendary Porsche 959.

Porsche’s fingerprints are all over the finished car, contributing brakes, wheels, and even indicator and fog light components borrowed from the 964 and 993 generation 911. Power came from a 2.2 litre turbocharged inline five cylinder engine producing 315 horsepower, paired with Audi’s quattro all wheel drive system, propelling the RS2 from 0 to 62 mph in around 4.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 163 mph, making it the first Audi ever to break the 155 mph barrier. With family friendly practicality wrapped around genuine supercar baiting performance, the RS2 famously out accelerated cars like the Ferrari Testarossa and Porsche 930 Turbo off the line, and with fewer than 3,000 examples built between 1994 and 1995, it remains one of the most celebrated sleeper wagons ever created.
