Description
The Nissan SilEighty (also written as Sil80) represents one of the most genuinely unique hybrid vehicles to emerge from Japan’s grassroots car tuning culture, its name a portmanteau of “Silvia” and “180SX”, referring to the two cars combined to create it. Built on the RPS13 chassis, the SilEighty takes a Nissan 180SX hatchback and replaces its front end with that of the coupe bodied Silvia S13, a swap that originated among street racers who found Silvia front end parts cheaper to source than genuine 180SX components after crash damage.
What began as a purely grassroots modification eventually caught Nissan’s attention, and in 1998 the Nagoya based tuning shop Kid’s Heart partnered with Nissan’s own “Sileighty Division” to produce roughly 500 officially built SilEighty hybrids, complete with dedicated SilEighty badging on each end, a rare case of an enthusiast built modification becoming an officially trademarked factory product. Powered by the venerable SR20DET turbocharged inline four engine shared across the Silvia and 180SX lineup, producing over 200 horsepower depending on specification, the SilEighty combined the lightweight 180SX chassis with the more distinctive Silvia front fascia, creating a genuinely unique silhouette that has since become a cult favorite among JDM enthusiasts, further cemented by its appearance as Mako Sato’s signature car in the celebrated anime series Initial D.
Hot Wheels celebrates this genuinely unique JDM hybrid as part of its Modern Classics range within the Car Culture series, an imported line known for its detailed, adult collector focused castings of celebrated Japanese classics. This casting is finished in a striking Blue paint that captures the SilEighty’s distinctive mixed body styling at 1:64 scale, paying tribute to a genuinely one of a kind chapter in Nissan’s tuning history.
