Description
The Fiat 131 Abarth stands as one of the most successful and celebrated rally cars of the late 1970s, developed by Abarth, Fiat’s in-house performance tuning department, to replace the aging 124 Abarth Rallye. Built from the relatively humble underpinnings of the everyday Fiat 131 Mirafiori family sedan, the 131 Abarth Rally was homologated for FIA Group 4 competition through a limited run of just 400 street legal examples, produced between 1976 and 1978 with fiberglass and aluminum bodywork built in collaboration with famed Italian coachbuilder Bertone.
Powered by a Lampredi designed Fiat Twin Cam engine capable of producing up to 240 horsepower in competition trim, and fitted with dry sump lubrication and Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, the 131 Abarth proved to be a genuinely formidable Group 4 rally weapon. Across five seasons in the World Rally Championship, the car claimed the manufacturers’ title three times, in 1977, 1978, and 1980, while drivers Markku Alen and Walter Röhrl secured individual drivers’ championships in 1978 and 1980 respectively. In total, the 131 Abarth notched up 20 World Rally Championship victories, with Alen alone claiming seven wins, cementing the car’s legacy as a genuine giant slayer that outshone even the more celebrated Lancia Stratos in its heyday.
Hot Wheels celebrates this three time World Rally Championship winning legend as part of its Modern Classics range within the Car Culture series, an imported line known for its detailed, adult collector focused castings of celebrated real world rally icons. This casting captures the 131 Abarth’s boxy three box silhouette, widened wheel arches, and purposeful rally proportions at 1:64 scale, finished in a bold Red paint that pays tribute to one of the most important homologation specials in rallying history.
