Description
The Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II stands as the car that singlehandedly transformed Mercedes-Benz’s image from a builder of dignified business sedans into a legitimate racing powerhouse. Built to homologate a competitive contender for the fiercely fought Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM), Mercedes produced just 502 examples in 1990, with 500 finished in the model’s signature blue-black metallic and only two painted silver, meeting the minimum production threshold required to qualify the car for touring car competition against arch rivals like the BMW E30 M3.
Developed with aerodynamic input from Professor Richard Eppler of the University of Stuttgart, the Evo II featured dramatically flared wide fenders, a towering rear wing, and height adjustable suspension, giving it one of the most outrageous silhouettes Mercedes had ever put into production. Under the skin, its high revving 2.5 litre four cylinder engine produced 232 to 235 horsepower in road trim, while the DTM race spec version pushed output well beyond 300 horsepower, eventually reaching as much as 373 horsepower in championship winning form. The car’s efforts paid off spectacularly in 1992, when driver Klaus Ludwig claimed the DTM Drivers’ Championship behind the wheel of the Evo II, delivering Mercedes its first title in the series and cementing the car’s legendary status.
Hot Wheels celebrates this genuinely transformative homologation special as part of its Modern Classics range within the Car Culture series, an imported line known for its detailed, adult collector focused castings of celebrated real world performance cars. This casting captures the Evo II’s dramatically flared fenders, towering rear wing, and aggressive touring car proportions at 1:64 scale, paying tribute to the car often credited with making the AMG badge a reality.
