Born from an idea Chrysler president Bob Lutz had after spending a weekend with an AC Cobra kit car, the Viper project took shape at Chrysler’s Advanced Design Studios in 1988, with Tom Gale penning a modern take on a raw, no compromise roadster. After debuting as a prototype at the 1989 North American International Auto Show and pacing the 1991 Indianapolis 500 with Carroll Shelby himself behind the wheel, the Viper finally reached customers in January 1992, with just 285 examples built for that inaugural model year.

Every single 1992 Viper was delivered in the same Viper Red exterior with a gray interior, a mandatory color combination for the car’s debut year.
