The Mercury Cougar debuted in 1967 as Mercury’s answer to the wildly successful Ford Mustang, sharing its underlying platform but offered with a slightly longer wheelbase, distinctive sheet metal, and more upscale trim aimed at buyers who wanted pony car style with a touch more sophistication. The Cougar was an immediate hit, earning Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award in its debut year and selling over 150,000 units, proving there was genuine appetite in the market for a more mature, refined take on the pony car formula that Ford’s own Mustang had created.
For 1968, the Cougar received federally mandated safety updates including side marker lights and front outboard shoulder belts, while the engine lineup expanded significantly. Alongside the standard 302 cubic inch V8, buyers could now option a 335 horsepower 428 and, in the ultra rare GT-E package, Ford’s legendary 427 side oiler V8 producing 390 horsepower, the only Ford product to offer that engine in 1968 and the final year Ford used it in any model. Just 394 GT-E Cougars were built that year, making it one of the rarest and most sought after variants in the Cougar’s entire history, while special packages like the XR7-G, developed in partnership with racing driver Dan Gurney, added further performance and styling credibility to the lineup.
