The 1968 Shelby GT500 marked an important transitional year for Carroll Shelby’s legendary performance Mustangs, as production shifted from Shelby’s own operation in California to A.O. Smith’s facility in Ionia, Michigan, with Ford taking increasing control over the program. Despite this shift, the GT500 continued to deliver genuine performance, powered by a 428 cubic inch Police Interceptor V8 producing 360 horsepower and 420 lb ft of torque, and for the first time, buyers could choose a convertible body style alongside the traditional fastback. Styling grew more aggressive too, with a reshaped hood pushing the twin air scoops further forward and a new integrated rear spoiler giving the car a genuinely purposeful look.
Midway through the model year, Shelby and Ford introduced the legendary GT500 KR, standing for “King of the Road,” fitted with the new 428 Cobra Jet engine borrowed from Ford’s high performance parts bin. Conservatively rated at 335 horsepower, the Cobra Jet actually produced closer to 400 horsepower and 440 lb ft of torque in reality, making the GT500 KR one of the fastest and most desirable muscle cars of its era. With only 4,451 total Shelby Mustangs built for 1968, these cars are widely regarded as the final generation to carry Shelby’s direct personal influence before Ford assumed full control of the program the following year.
