The Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy holds a genuinely historic place in motorsport as the world’s first all electric, production based international race series. Announced in September 2017 and launching for the 2018-19 season, the eTrophy ran as the official support series to the FIA Formula E Championship, with up to 20 identical race prepared Jaguar I-Pace SV cars competing head to head at select Formula E weekends around the world. The series followed Jaguar’s own entry into Formula E in 2016 as the first premium manufacturer to join the championship, and was designed to showcase the performance potential of Jaguar’s first ever battery electric road car, the I-Pace, which had launched that same year.
Each race weekend featured a practice session, qualifying, and a 25 minute race, with the second season introducing a Formula E style Attack Mode that temporarily boosted power output to 442 horsepower for drivers willing to take a riskier line to unlock it. Despite its innovative format and genuine technical significance, the eTrophy ran for only two seasons before Jaguar withdrew the series in 2020, citing a strategic reorientation of its motorsport program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even so, the eTrophy left a lasting legacy, with lessons learned from the racing program directly informing improvements to the range and performance of the road going I-Pace.
