The 2016 Ford GT Race refers to the Ford GT LM GTE, a purpose built grand touring race car developed by Multimatic for Ford Performance and based on the second generation Ford GT road car. Styled by Chris Svensson, the GT LM GTE marked Ford’s official return to endurance racing and was powered by a 3.5 litre EcoBoost twin turbocharged V6 paired with a Ricardo 6 speed sequential transmission, competing in both the IMSA SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship in the GTE and GTLM classes.
The car’s defining moment came at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, exactly 50 years after Ford’s historic 1966 victory that famously ended Ferrari’s dominance at the race. The number 66 GT LM GTE, driven by Joey Hand, Dirk Muller, and Sebastien Bourdais, took class victory in a poignant echo of that original triumph. The GT LM GTE went on to further success, winning the 2018 IMSA SportsCar Championship Constructors’ title before Ford wound down the factory program after 2019, closing out the effort with a final win by a privately entered Keating Motorsports car at the 2019 Le Mans, though that result was later rescinded over a fuel capacity infraction.
Hot Wheels celebrates this modern racing successor as part of its Then and Now series, finished in a metallic Green paint that highlights the GT LM GTE’s aggressive aerodynamic bodywork, prominent rear wing, and low slung race proportions at 1:64 scale.
