The Chevrolet LUV, short for Light Utility Vehicle, holds a notable place in automotive history as the first Isuzu built vehicle ever sold in the United States. Introduced in March 1972, the LUV was actually a rebadged version of the Isuzu Faster, brought over as part of a growing partnership between General Motors and Isuzu after GM acquired a stake in the Japanese automaker. Chevrolet needed a genuine answer to the wave of small, fuel efficient trucks arriving from Japan, and the LUV filled that role well, going up directly against rivals like the Datsun PL620, Toyota Hilux, and Ford’s Mazda built Courier.

Powered by a modest 1.8 litre, 75 horsepower four cylinder engine paired with a 4 speed manual transmission, the LUV wasn’t the fastest or most refined truck on the market, but Car and Driver magazine praised it in 1972 for having the roomiest cab in its class. Chevrolet sold the LUV successfully in North America for a decade, moving over half a million units between 1972 and 1982 before it was eventually replaced by the domestically built Chevrolet S-10. Today, the LUV is a genuine cult favorite among vintage compact truck collectors, valued for its simple, honest charm and its role in kickstarting the compact pickup segment in America.
