Description
The Nissan Skyline 2000GT-R, affectionately nicknamed the “Hakosuka” (a combination of the Japanese words for “box” and “Skyline”), is widely regarded as the car that started the legendary GT-R bloodline. First launched as a four door sedan in February 1969 under the internal code PGC10, a lighter two door coupe version, the KPGC10, followed in 1970. Both were powered by the S20, a 2.0 litre DOHC inline six engine derived directly from the Nissan R380 racing program, producing around 160 horsepower, an exceptional figure for its era. Built primarily for motorsport dominance, the Hakosuka delivered an extraordinary 50 consecutive race wins across Japanese touring car competition in the early 1970s, cementing the GT-R name as a symbol of Japanese performance long before the Skyline became a global icon.
This casting depicts the Hakosuka wearing a widebody kit from Liberty Walk, the Japanese aftermarket tuning company founded in 2007 by Wataru Kato. Known worldwide for its aggressive, riveted widebody conversions on everything from Lamborghinis to classic JDM icons, Liberty Walk’s LB Works kit for the KPGC10 adds dramatic bolt on fender flares, widening the car’s stance for a more aggressive, track inspired look while nodding to Japan’s kaido racer culture, a street styling movement inspired by 1970s and 1980s touring car aesthetics.
Hot Wheels brings this widebody Hakosuka into its Then and Now series, a lineup dedicated to pairing classic vehicles with modern tuning influences. This casting captures the Skyline’s boxy, upright greenhouse alongside the flared, riveted fender styling of the Liberty Walk kit, translating a genuinely head turning real world build into 1:64 scale.
