Description
The Ferrari 250 GTO stands as one of the most legendary cars in automotive history, widely regarded by many enthusiasts as the most beautiful Ferrari ever built. Designed by Giotto Bizzarrini and based on the 250 GT SWB chassis, the GTO was unveiled at Ferrari’s press conference in February 1962, standing out as the only front engine model on display that year while every other Ferrari racing car had already moved to a mid engine layout. Its name, GTO, stands for “Gran Turismo Omologato,” Italian for “Homologated Grand Tourer,” reflecting its purpose as a genuine dual purpose car, equally capable of being driven to the track, raced competitively, and then driven home again.
Powered by a 3.0 litre V12 producing around 300 horsepower, the 250 GTO delivered an extraordinary run of success on the racetrack, capturing three consecutive World Championships for Ferrari between 1962 and 1964, along with class wins at legendary endurance races including Le Mans, Sebring, and the Targa Florio, as well as outright victories in events like the Tour de France Automobile. Ferrari built only 36 examples in total, a scarcity that, combined with its unmatched racing pedigree, has made the 250 GTO one of the most coveted and valuable cars in the world, with examples having sold at auction and in private sales for figures well over 50 million US dollars, at times holding the record for the most expensive car ever sold.
Hot Wheels honors this legendary racer as part of its Car Culture Vintage Racing series, an imported line known for its detailed, adult collector focused castings of historically significant motorsport machinery. This model is finished in a classic White paint, capturing the 250 GTO’s flowing, sinuous body lines, long hood, and iconic rounded rear haunches at 1:64 scale, giving collectors an accurate tribute to what many consider the single most important Ferrari ever produced.
