Description

The Aston Martin DBR1 is one of the most significant sports racing cars in the marque’s history, and it remains the only car to have won the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright for Aston Martin, a feat achieved in 1959. Designed by Ted Cutting under the direction of David Brown, the man behind the “DB” in every Aston Martin model name, the DBR1 was built from a clean sheet for the 1956 season, once new regulations allowed manufacturers to move away from road based sports cars and design a dedicated racing prototype. It featured a lightweight multi tube chassis, torsion bar suspension, and an all aluminium straight six engine, originally 2.5 litres before growing to 3.0 litres by 1958.

The DBR1 made its competition debut at the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by Tony Brooks and Reg Parnell, running as high as fourth before a mechanical failure forced retirement late in the race. It took a few seasons to find its stride, picking up victories at Spa and the Nurburgring through 1957 and 1958, before its crowning achievement at Le Mans in 1959, driven to victory by Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori. That win, combined with strong results across the season, secured Aston Martin the World Sportscar Championship that year, a high point the brand has never quite repeated at Le Mans since.
